I installed this new type of bellow. The ends are of hard rubber and the bellows themselves are made of some kind of hard plastic. From what I read, the hard plastic is longer lasting as well as protects from barnacles build up, fishing hooks, etc. Took me a while to figure out how to install this. It’s not as flexible as the original rubber bellow. Some forum on the Internet says to remove the pivot housing but was not wanting to go that route. I ended up removing the exhaust bellow and going from underneath as I couldn’t get it through the side; even when I disconnected the hydraulic lines. Very tough to install but the bellow appears to be very durable in the long run! Time will tell but I think I wont have to worry about replacing the bellow for years. Make sure to read the instructions to install the bellow correctly. Mines had to have the rubber lock lip between 1 and 2 o’clock. I suspect that it’s to ensure that the bellow doesn’t bend at the seams. Also, make sure that everything is seated correctly. You can check for this by measuring the distance between the inner lip and outer edge of the casing; should be even. Remember, never have the outdrive trimmed all the way up unless you’re trailering the boat or doing some kind of maintenance. It should always be down and centered so the bellows don’t stretch out or rip. This is true for rubber bellows as well.

New style easy installation

The material is much more stuff than what I’ve used before. I was skeptical about how it would hold up to being stretched while trimming up and down. Turns out I was right for questioning it’s ability. This bellow tore immediately when I was merely testing it after installation. Thank goodness I found out this way instead of having water in my gimbal housing after running it in the water

This is a new style hard plastic OEM Volvo Penta U joint bellows. Installs the same as old style. Have run it 50 hours so far no faults.

Seems a little stiff. But I guess that’s Volvo oem standards now. Work for me.
